On the Appalachian Trail, you will need a lightweight utility cord to hang your food bag in the trees or to put up a line to hang your wet clothes.

Here are some tips when shopping for it…

  • It should be about 50 ft long, a diameter of 3mm, made of nylon, and hold at least 30 lbs of weight.
  • It’s sometimes called a parachute cord.
  • Try to get a brightly colored utility cord so that you can find it easily among the trees.
  • You can find utility cords in the sports section at Target or Wal-Mart for a few bucks.
